Global semiconductor giant Intel has announced plans to spin off its networking and communications division into a separate company, according to a report by Reuters. This move is part of the company’s broader strategy under newly appointed CEO Lip-Bu Tan to streamline operations by cutting costs and focusing on its core business segments.

The unit, formerly known as "NEX," generated approximately $5.8 billion in revenue in 2024, accounting for nearly 11% of Intel’s total sales. The company has already begun searching for potential investors to support the new entity.

Previously, Intel sold control of its Altera chip unit in a $8.75 billion deal. However, the company clarified that it would remain the primary investor in the new networking venture.

The announcement comes amid increasing pressure on Intel as it struggles to establish a firm foothold in the highly competitive AI chip market. Coupled with high-cost strategies and mounting losses, Intel's stock price dropped by 9% on Friday. Speculation has also arisen regarding the company’s possible future exit from direct chip manufacturing.

The planned spin-off reflects Intel’s evolving approach to adapt to changing market dynamics and to ensure long-term profitability by prioritizing its strongest performing divisions.
