German Regulator Urges Apple, Google to Remove DeepSeek Over Privacy Concerns

Germany’s data protection commissioner Meike Kamp has called for the removal of Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek from Apple and Google’s app stores, citing serious privacy violations. The move follows allegations that the app unlawfully transfers users’ personal data to China, according to a report by Reuters.
Commissioner Kamp stated that DeepSeek was instructed in May to meet the European Union’s equivalent data protection standards but has failed to comply.
Italy has already banned the DeepSeek app earlier this year, while the Netherlands has prohibited its use on government-issued devices. Belgium and Spain are currently conducting investigations into the app’s practices.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has taken a more permissive stance, stating that the app’s use is up to individual user preference. Accusations have also surfaced suggesting that DeepSeek is aiding Chinese military and intelligence operations.
Neither Apple nor Google has issued an official comment on the matter as of yet.
