Meta Moves to Modernize Logins with Passkey Support

Meta is finally rolling out passkey support for Facebook and Messenger, aiming to enhance both ease and security of user logins on mobile devices. According to a Reuters report, once the feature is activated, users will be able to log in to their accounts using device-based authentication methods such as a PIN code, fingerprint, or facial recognition.
The passkey system is not only more convenient but also significantly more secure than traditional passwords. “It can protect against phishing or hacking attacks because it’s not easily guessable and is difficult to steal,” the report highlighted.
Meta announced that this new feature will soon be available to both iOS and Android users on Facebook. However, for Messenger, the company stated that implementation will take slightly longer and will be introduced “in the coming months.” Once configured, the same passkey can be used across both apps.
While tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and PayPal have already implemented passkey login systems, Meta had lagged behind. WhatsApp currently offers passkey login, but Instagram has yet to adopt the system.
This move places Meta in line with broader industry trends aiming to eliminate password vulnerabilities and shift toward more robust, user-friendly authentication technologies.
