Apple has commenced iPhone production at a new Tata Electronics facility in Hosur, southern India, according to Reuters. The plant is currently assembling older iPhone models across multiple assembly lines. Meanwhile, Foxconn’s $2.6 billion factory in Bengaluru is set to begin operations within days, focusing on the production of iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models.

At full capacity, the Foxconn plant is expected to generate employment for approximately 50,000 people.

Amid ongoing trade tensions between China and the United States, including tariff threats from former President Donald Trump, Apple has intensified its focus on India as a strategic manufacturing hub.

While China still produces around 75% of the world’s iPhones, India now accounts for 18% of global iPhone production. Apple plans to significantly expand its Indian output to cater to the U.S. market by 2026.

In March, Apple exported 600 tonnes of India-manufactured iPhones to the United States, valued at $2 billion — marking the highest-ever monthly export record for both Tata and Foxconn.
