KUET Clashes: Jubo Dal Leader Expelled for Brandishing Machete
Mahbubur Rahman has been expelled from his position as vice president of the Daulatpur Thana unit of Jubo Dal after he was seen wielding a sharp weapon (ramda) during clashes between general students and Chhatra Dal activists at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday night, February 18, by Nurul Islam Sohel, the central office secretary of Jubo Dal.
The statement said, “Mahbubur Rahman has been expelled from the party for engaging in activities that violate party discipline. The party will not take responsibility for any misconduct committed by expelled leaders. All Jubo Dal activists at every level have been instructed to sever organizational ties with him.” The decision was enforced by Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Noyon.
Meanwhile, Rabiul Islam Rubel, the member secretary of the Khulna Metropolitan Jubo Dal, contested the central statement, claiming that there were some factual inaccuracies. “Mahbubur currently does not hold any official position in Jubo Dal. His presence in the KUET area was his personal decision and had no connection with the organization,” he said.
The clashes at KUET erupted on Tuesday, February 18, over demands to ban student politics on campus. Tensions escalated between activists of Chhatra Dal and students affiliated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Both sides chased each other, and the situation worsened when BNP activists from Railgate, Teligati, and other surrounding areas joined Chhatra Dal members, while general students and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists aligned with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The violent confrontation lasted nearly three hours, leaving around fifty students injured, many with sharp weapon wounds. During the clashes, several individuals were seen wielding machetes against students. Local sources identified one of them, a man wearing a half-sleeved shirt and a scarf covering his face while holding a machete, as Jubo Dal leader Mahbubur Rahman.
