DNA Test Confirms Identity of One Among Seven Unidentified Bodies

Through DNA profiling, one of the seven unidentified bodies has been confirmed as Mohammad Hasan (19). The bodies have been lying unclaimed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for the past six months following the deaths of student protestors during the mass uprising.

On Friday, a funeral prayer for Hasan, who was martyred in police gunfire at Jatrabari on August 5, was held at the Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus. Following the prayers, the "Anti-Discrimination Student Movement" organized a coffin procession, demanding a ban on the Awami League, which they accused of orchestrating the mass killings during the July uprising.

Hasan’s parents, Monir Hossain and Golenu Begum, arrived to collect their son’s body after seven months of agonizing uncertainty. The hospital premises turned somber as Hasan’s grieving parents and relatives broke into tears. His father, Monir Hossain, demanded justice for his son's killing, while his mother, Golenu Begum, lamented, "Which heartless person killed my son like this? Did their heart not tremble even once? If my son had committed a crime, they could have informed us, but why was he murdered like this?"

She further expressed her grief, saying, "I had named my son Hasan and Ibrahim Khalilullah. How will I survive without him? Those who killed my son, Allah will judge them."

Monir Hossain recalled, "My son went missing from Jatrabari on August 5. Upon receiving the news, I came to Dhaka and searched for him for five months at Dhaka Medical College, Midford, Suhrawardy Hospital, Anjuman Mofidul Islam, and other places, but found no trace of him."

Initially, police refused to register a general diary (GD) regarding Hasan’s disappearance, and it was only after 19 days that a GD was finally accepted. He added, "My son had two mobile phones with him, but someone took them away."

Following the funeral prayers at Raju Sculpture, a protest march traversed the university campus, culminating in a brief gathering at the Vice-Chancellor's square. Protesters chanted slogans such as "Ban Ban, Awami League!", "Break and crush Awami League’s stronghold!", "My brother is in a coffin, why are the killers free?", "Student uprising—Direct action!", "Hey Hasina, where will you run?", "Down with Mujibism, long live the revolution!", and "We will not let our brother’s blood go in vain!"

Authorities have urged families with missing relatives from the uprising to visit the medical forensic department for DNA identification of the remaining six bodies.

Speaking with Hasan’s relatives, it was revealed that he was the second of four siblings. He had been residing at his elder sister’s house in Jatrabari and worked at his brother-in-law’s electronics shop in Kaptan Bazar. His family home is in Kachia, Bhola Sadar, where a second funeral prayer will be held before Hasan is laid to rest in the family graveyard.
