AI Laptop Leap: Google Unveils “Googlebook” to Replace Chromebooks

Google has announced a major transformation in the laptop industry after 15 years, unveiling its new laptop series named “Googlebook” on Tuesday. Built around artificial intelligence (AI), the new devices are positioned as the successor to the popular Chromebook lineup and will be available in the global market starting this autumn.

AI-Powered New Operating System

Googlebook is not just a new laptop series—it marks the beginning of a new chapter for Google. Instead of ChromeOS, the devices will run on a new Android-based operating system powered by Google’s advanced AI model “Gemini”. Major hardware manufacturers including Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo are already working with Google to develop these laptops.

“Magic Pointer”: A Smarter Cursor Experience

One of the most striking features of Googlebook is the “Magic Pointer”. Unlike a traditional mouse cursor, it intelligently understands user intent. For example, hovering over a date in an email can automatically suggest scheduling a meeting. Similarly, selecting two separate images—such as a living room and a sofa—can instantly generate a visual AI simulation showing how the sofa would look in that space.

Integration of Phone and Laptop

Googlebook users will be able to run Android apps directly on their laptops. The phone’s file browser will also be seamlessly connected to the laptop, making it much easier to access and use mobile files on a larger screen.

Custom Widgets and Personal Dashboard

The system introduces a “Create Your Widget” feature, allowing users to generate custom widgets simply by instructing Gemini. It can pull data from Gmail, Calendar, and the web to create a personalized dashboard. For example, when planning a trip, it can display flight details, hotel reservations, and destination weather in a single unified view.

What Happens to Chromebooks?

Although Google has not explicitly used the word “farewell,” it is clear that Googlebook represents the future of Chromebooks. The company stated that existing Chromebook users will continue receiving updates for their committed support period. However, many devices may eventually be upgraded or transitioned to the new Googlebook experience.

Technology analysts say Googlebook is a direct competitor to Microsoft’s “Copilot Plus PCs”. Google’s key goal is to transform laptops from browser-centric machines into powerful AI-driven devices.
