Microsoft Faces Windows 11 Woes with First 2026 Security Update
At the start of 2026, Microsoft ran into trouble with Windows 11’s first security update. Released on 13 January, the update caused some computers to fail to shut down or enter hibernation properly.
In addition to the shutdown issues, some users experienced problems logging in via Remote Desktop. To address the situation, Microsoft was forced to release an emergency “out-of-band” patch just four days later, on 17 January.
According to Microsoft, the issue is limited in scope but serious, affecting only Windows 11 version 23H2, specifically the Enterprise and IoT editions. Devices with Secure Launch enabled were particularly impacted, failing to shut down or hibernate correctly.
Meanwhile, remote connection and authentication errors were observed in the latest version of Windows 11, certain versions of Windows 10, and even Windows Server 2025.
Though such incidents were once rare, Microsoft has increasingly needed to issue urgent patches, raising fresh concerns among tech analysts about the quality and reliability of software updates.
