Face Recognition Secures Postal Votes, Says EC Commissioner
Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah has assured that facial recognition technology eliminates any chance of fraud in postal ballots.
On 19 January, Monday, at the Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka, he responded to journalists’ questions, stating that face detection ensures that no one can cast a postal vote on behalf of someone else. He added that social media rumors creating confusion should be ignored, as every vote will be verified with utmost care.
During the briefing, the Commissioner revealed that due to address issues, 5,600 postal ballots from overseas voters—specifically from Malaysia and Italy—were returned. Statistics showed that 4,000 ballots came back from Malaysia and 1,600 from Italy.
Highlighting the importance of digital security, he urged citizens not to be misled by online misinformation, emphasizing that every vote is fully secured in this digital era.
On the technical side, the Commissioner explained that each postal ballot contains 39 marks embedded in the folds. To ensure a smooth and transparent voting process, presiding officers have been given special instructions to carefully manage these ballots.
