Adobe has announced that it has agreed to acquire search engine optimization firm Semrush for approximately $1.9 billion. The company said it will purchase Semrush at $12 per share, nearly twice the previous day’s closing price of $6.89. As of Tuesday’s market value, Semrush was worth around $1 billion, according to TechCrunch.

With this acquisition, Adobe expects that more companies will increasingly invest in making their websites and content visible to AI-powered tools in the future.

Today, people are using generative AI browsers, agents, and chatbots for almost everything—getting news, finding recipes, shopping, and even booking travel. As a result, alongside traditional SEO, a new AI-based discovery market is expanding rapidly.

According to Adobe, as of last October, visits to retailers’ websites from generative AI chatbots have increased by 1,200% compared to the previous year.

Semrush has recently increased its investment in the concept of “Generative Engine Optimization” and launched a new tool that helps optimize websites not only for traditional SEO but also for AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Grok, and Perplexity.

Anil Chakravarthy, President of Adobe’s Digital Experience business, said,

“Generative AI is creating a new era of brand visibility. With Semrush joining us, marketers will gain new paths to growth—boosting visibility, user engagement, and conversions.”
