Climate Collaboration Call: Engineers Endorse Youth-Led Green Innovation

Bangladeshi engineers have underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in technology transfer to address the challenges of climate change. They urged joint public–private initiatives to ensure the sustainable use of the country’s natural resources through green technology and engineering. The speakers further stressed that engaging youth in tech-driven sustainable engineering research and innovation is essential for sustainable development.

They made these remarks at a seminar titled “Youth Engagement for a Sustainable Future,” held on Sunday evening, October 26, at the permanent campus of BRAC University in Badda, Dhaka. The event marked the inauguration of the Institute of Climate Change, Environment, and Sustainability (ICCES) and the observance of International Climate Action Day.

The seminar was presided over by Engineer Sheikh Tajul Islam Tuhin, Chairman of ICCES, while Dr. Ainun Nishat, Emeritus Professor at the BRAC University Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research, attended as the chief guest.

Among the discussants were environmental researcher Dr. Hasib Md Irfanullah; senior researcher at the Institute of Water Modelling, Dr. Anwar Zahid; AKM Sohel, UN Wing Chief of the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance; and Ratul Dev, Executive Director of GenLab, among others.

The speakers emphasized the need to “inspire youth leadership for a sustainable future, transforming climate challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.” They added that it is crucial to identify niche markets for climate coordination and strengthen synergy between research and consultancy. According to them, “Integrated initiatives must be taken in key areas such as adaptation, mitigation, climate finance, capacity building, technology transfer, transparency, and compliance — while also exploring unexplored domains to attract international funding.”

Chief guest Dr. Ainun Nishat stated, “We must ensure the sustainable use of the country’s natural resources and limit overexploitation. To achieve a sustainable future, we need to inspire youth leadership to transform climate challenges into opportunities for sustainable development. The nation’s capacity to face climate change must be strengthened.”

The seminar, attended by students, researchers, and climate leaders, focused on inspiring young people to build a climate-resilient Bangladesh. With youth engagement at its core, the ICCES was formally launched at the event. Organizers noted that the institute will work to advance climate research, policy dialogue, and youth-led innovation in the coming years.
