Generative AI for Growth: UGC Urges Universities to Lead Research and Talent Development
Universities across Bangladesh must step forward to harness the potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI), conduct research to address its challenges, and produce skilled professionals in the field—emphasized Professor Dr. Md. Saidur Rahman, Member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.
He made the call while speaking as the chief guest at a training workshop titled “Generative AI for Productivity and Innovation” held on Wednesday, October 15, at the UGC auditorium.
The two-day training program has been jointly organized by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division of UGC and the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN).
Chaired by Md. Omar Faruk, Director of UGC’s ICT Division, the event was also attended by UGC Secretary Dr. Md. Fakhrul Islam as the special guest. Muhammad Nazmul Islam, Additional Director of the IMCT Division, delivered the welcome remarks.
Professor Saidur Rahman observed that Bangladesh still lags behind in the use of data-driven generative AI. Considering the country’s language, religion, and cultural context, he urged university researchers to develop indigenous data-driven AI solutions suited to Bangladesh’s needs.
Cautioning against the negative aspects of generative AI, he added, “It will make everyday tasks easier, but there are concerns about job displacement. Hence, rational use of generative AI along with the cultivation of creativity must continue.”
UGC Secretary Dr. Fakhrul Islam remarked that there is no alternative to adopting generative AI if the nation aims to elevate human thinking, skills, and creativity. He further noted its potential for improving administrative efficiency and innovation capacity.
The training sessions are being conducted by BdREN General Manager Khandaker Rashedul Arefin, Manager Abu Naser Md. Nafiu, Network Engineer Pranto Pal, and Senior Software Engineer Poonam Chowdhury.
Among the 29 participants are Dr. Md. Sultan Mahmud Bhuiya, Director of the Private University Division; Jasmin Parvin, Acting Director of the International Collaboration Division; and Nahid Sultana, Acting Director of the Audit Division.
The program was moderated by Imtiaz Ahmed, Senior Assistant Director of the ICT Division.
