Engineers’ Institute Expresses Outrage Over Assault on BUET Students

The Engineers Institution, Bangladesh (IEB), the country’s oldest and national organization of engineers, has expressed anger, condemnation, and protest over the “sudden attack” by law enforcement personnel on the students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) as they began their previously announced ‘Long March to Dhaka’ program from Shahbagh towards the Jamuna.

IEB stated—“Instead of ensuring the safety of students, law enforcement authorities have taken an aggressive stance. Shedding the blood of tender-hearted future engineers is in no way acceptable.”

In a press release signed by the Acting General Secretary of the Central Committee, Engineer Md. Nur Amin, the organization further said: “An attack on future engineers is an attack on the country. Though the students of the country’s engineering and technology universities are students today, they are tomorrow’s engineers. It is through their hands that a sustainable and advanced Bangladesh will be built. Any assault on them means blocking the path of the nation’s future development.”

Additionally, condemning the incident in a signed statement dated Wednesday, August 27, IEB remarked: “An attack on the nation’s meritorious children will not only hinder their development but will also cause serious damage to the national interest.” Alongside condemnation, the IEB put forward four demands:

  1. Proper medical treatment must be ensured for the injured students.

  2. Immediate measures must be taken to guarantee the safety of the students.

  3. A proper investigation must be conducted to identify the perpetrators.

  4. Strict departmental action must be taken against those responsible.
