Meta Launches ‘Teen Accounts’ to Enhance Safety for Adolescents

Meta has introduced “Teen Accounts” on Facebook and Messenger to strengthen security for teenagers. This feature, which was previously launched on Instagram, mandates parental control and imposes restrictions on messaging with strangers. According to Engadget, these accounts are designed to offer a safer environment for young users.

The accounts are compulsory for users aged between 13 and 15, and Instagram has implemented special measures to detect age fraud. Under the new rules, teenagers cannot change privacy settings without parental consent, and their screen time and friends list can be monitored by their parents.

Additionally, new security features have been added to Instagram. Users under 16 years of age will require parental consent to start live broadcasts, and permission will be needed to disable "Nudity Protection." These measures have been introduced in response to ongoing criticism of the impact Meta’s apps have on the mental health of teenagers.
