Bangladesh Television (BTV) will broadcast all matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 live across the country, ensuring nationwide access to the world's biggest football tournament at a minimal cost to viewers.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury during a press conference held at the Secretariat. State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque and Adviser to Prime Minister Zahed Ur Rahman were also present and addressed the media.

In his remarks, the state minister said that while previous World Cup broadcasting deals had often been criticized for involving excessive expenditure, the current government remains committed to safeguarding public funds and ensuring maximum value for money.

He explained that after the present government assumed office, a complicated situation emerged regarding the acquisition of World Cup broadcasting rights. A company that had initially secured rights from FIFA reportedly demanded nearly Tk 2 billion for the rights package. Rather than accepting what it considered an unreasonable proposal, the government initiated direct negotiations with FIFA.

According to the minister, the government involved the Bangladesh Football Federation and its newly elected president Tabith Awal in the negotiations. Following extensive discussions and bargaining, the parties were able to reach a practical and cost-effective agreement.

Under the final arrangement, the broadcasting rights have been acquired at a cost of US$3.85 million, equivalent to approximately Tk 472.59 million at the current exchange rate. Including VAT and income tax, the total expenditure is expected to reach around Tk 637.99 million.

However, the minister noted that almost the entire cost has already been recovered through the sale of advertising opportunities and co-broadcasting rights to telecommunications operators, private satellite television channels and OTT platforms. As a result, BTV will not incur any financial loss or additional burden in broadcasting the tournament.

Emphasizing the government's commitment to transparency and responsible use of public resources, Yasser Khan Chowdhury congratulated millions of football fans across the country.

He said that after overcoming all challenges, viewers throughout Bangladesh will be able to enjoy the excitement and drama of FIFA World Cup 2026 matches seamlessly through BTV's nationwide broadcast network.

The press conference was also attended by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, senior officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and members of the media.
