Two tech giants—Google and SpaceX—have initiated discussions on establishing data centers in outer space, moving beyond the limitations of the Earth’s surface. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the companies are considering this ambitious step to meet the rapidly growing demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Elon Musk has claimed that within the next few years, space will become the most cost-effective location for AI compute. Currently, companies face challenges such as land acquisition and environmental constraints when building data centers on Earth. Establishing data centers in space could help avoid such local and legal complications, according to those involved.

Google is also advancing in space research. The company has undertaken a project named ‘Project SunCatcher’ under its own initiative. It plans to launch an experimental satellite under this project by 2027. In addition to SpaceX, Google is also continuing discussions with other rocket manufacturing companies in this regard. Notably, in 2015, Google invested $900 million in SpaceX.

However, while Musk describes the initiative as cost-effective, many technology analysts hold differing views. According to a recent report by TechCrunch, considering the high costs of satellite construction and launching them into space, operating data centers on Earth remains significantly more economical at present. Nevertheless, to manage the increasing pressure of future data usage, space may emerge as a primary alternative solution.

Later this year, SpaceX is preparing to launch an IPO worth $1.75 trillion. In February, SpaceX acquired Musk’s AI company xAI. Recently, SpaceX also entered into an agreement with leading AI startup Anthropic, under which the latter will utilize SpaceX’s computing resources. In the future, they may jointly work on orbital data centers.

Experts believe that if this competition to establish data centers in space succeeds, the speed and capacity of internet and cloud computing worldwide will reach a new height.
