Ad Tech Antitrust Action: Turkey Probes Google’s Billing and Advertising Practices
Turkey’s Competition Board has decided to launch a formal investigation against Alphabet Inc. and its affiliated Google companies. In a statement issued on Friday (April 3), the board said it will examine whether Google’s billing practices and its commercial policies in providing online advertising services to advertisers and advertising agencies violate Turkish law.
Turkey is an important market for Google. Last year, the country’s digital advertising market was valued at approximately $1.5 billion, with Google holding more than 40 percent market share.
Previously, Turkey had also brought anti-competitive allegations against Google. In 2022, the country’s Competition Board imposed a fine on the company.
Meanwhile, regulatory authorities in Europe have intensified scrutiny over Google’s business practices.
The European Union has recently initiated an investigation against Google over alleged violations of the Digital Markets Act.
Analysts say that the outcome of Turkey’s investigation could impact Google’s local operations.
