Mastercard and Prime Bank Launch Bangladesh’s First Numberless Card Without Visible Details
Marking a new chapter in Bangladesh’s digital payment ecosystem, Mastercard and Prime Bank Limited have jointly introduced the country’s first-ever numberless debit card. The innovative card has been launched in collaboration with Prime Bank’s digital service platform, ‘Prime Now’.
Unlike traditional cards, this new debit card will not display any visible card number, CVV (Card Verification Value), or expiry date on its surface. Concerned officials believe that the absence of such visible information will significantly reduce the risks of data copying, skimming, or theft through direct visual access.
All sensitive information associated with the card will be securely stored within the ‘Prime Now’ mobile application. To ensure robust security, the app incorporates multiple layers of authentication along with optional biometric features. As a result, cardholders will be able to access and use their online transaction details directly from their mobile phones as needed.
The card also offers customers comprehensive app-based control features. These include secure QR-based activation, the ability to set spending limits, manage access controls, and request digital reissuance. Since no information is visibly printed on the card, even if it is lost, there will be no opportunity for unauthorized use.
Tanvir Chowdhury, Chairman of the Board of Prime Bank, described the initiative as a significant step forward in the bank’s 30-year journey toward innovation and a future-focused approach. He expressed hope that the technology would further strengthen customer privacy protection and digital control.
Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager of Mastercard Bangladesh, characterized the card as an important milestone in the country’s digital payment journey, stating that it will meet customers’ growing demands for enhanced security and convenience.
Through this new card, customers will be able to enjoy various offers at more than 10,000 partner merchants of Mastercard across the country. Additionally, cardholders will have the option to select their preferred card design, add their own name to the card, and enable e-commerce functionality with a single tap.
It is noteworthy that Prime Bank, established in 1995, currently provides services through 149 branches and 158 ATMs nationwide. Meanwhile, Mastercard delivers its payment services in more than 200 countries around the world.
