WhatsApp Rolls Out ‘Strict Account Settings’ to Strengthen Security
WhatsApp is set to introduce a new high-security mode aimed at reducing the risks of cyberattacks and surveillance for users. According to a report by Reuters, the feature—named “Strict Account Settings”—will be rolled out gradually starting Tuesday. The mode can be activated with a single click and will simultaneously enable multiple enhanced security measures.
The report states that once the mode is enabled, images and files sent by unknown senders will be automatically blocked, link previews will be disabled, and calls from unfamiliar numbers will be silenced. These features have been identified as potential entry points for advanced surveillance and hacking attempts.
WhatsApp noted that while all user conversations are protected by end-to-end encryption by default, journalists, human rights activists, and public figures may require additional layers of protection due to the nature of their work and exposure.
Previously, Apple introduced “Lockdown Mode” for iPhone and Mac users in 2022, followed by the launch of “Advanced Protection Mode” on Android last year, both designed to provide heightened security against sophisticated cyber threats.
Cybersecurity researchers believe that WhatsApp’s latest initiative will play a significant role in protecting dissenters and activists, while also encouraging other technology companies to adopt stronger security safeguards for users.
