OpenAI Strikes Over $10bn Computing Deal with Cerebras
OpenAI has signed a large-scale computing agreement with Cerebras Systems, a rival chipmaker to Nvidia, in a move aimed at staying ahead in the artificial intelligence race and meeting rapidly growing demand. Sources familiar with the matter said the total value of the deal exceeds $10 billion, according to Reuters.
The two companies announced on Wednesday that over the next three years, OpenAI will purchase up to 750 megawatts of computing capacity from Cerebras.
Under the agreement, Cerebras will either build or lease chip-based data centres using its proprietary hardware, while OpenAI will use the computing power through cloud services to run inference and reasoning models for products including ChatGPT. The companies said the arrangement is expected to significantly improve AI response speed and performance.
Founded in 2015, Cerebras is best known for its wafer-scale engine technology, which accelerates the training and deployment of large AI models. The deal is also expected to strengthen Cerebras’s path toward a potential public listing.
