Russia Blocks Roblox Over ‘Extremism’ and ‘LGBT Propaganda’ Concerns
Russia has blocked access to the U.S.-based gaming platform Roblox, alleging the presence of “extremist elements” and “LGBT propaganda” on the platform. The country’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, stated that such content could negatively affect the “spiritual and moral development” of children, according to a Reuters report.
Following Wednesday’s announcement, the platform is no longer accessible in Russia. In a statement, Roblox said it respects the local laws of the countries where it operates and aims to provide a safe environment for learning, creativity, and connection. The company claims to have strong safety systems in place to detect and prevent harmful content.
Roblox reported 151.5 million daily active users in the third quarter. Prior to Russia’s move, Iraq and Turkey had also banned the platform over concerns that it could harm children online.
Roskomnadzor has previously blocked Western media and tech platforms for alleged violations of Russian laws. Last year, language-learning platform Duolingo removed references to “non-traditional sexual relations” following warnings from the regulator. In 2023, Russia declared the so-called “international LGBT movement” an extremist organization, paving the way for harsh legal actions against supporters.
In August this year, the country restricted certain calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, and recently, Roskomnadzor even threatened to shut down WhatsApp entirely.
