Mechanical engineers play a pivotal role in sustainable industrialization, modern production systems, and technology-driven transformation, observed Housing, Public Works and Industries Ministry Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan. “Mechanical engineers do not merely improve machinery—they are one of the driving forces behind the country’s overall socio-economic advancement,” he said.

He made the remarks on Thursday evening, 27 November, while addressing the opening ceremony of the 6th International Mechanical Engineering Conference (IMEC) and the 18th Annual Paper Meet, held at the seminar hall of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) headquarters in Ramna.

Referring to the recent earthquake, Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan stressed that technology-based planning is now essential for public safety. From constructing disaster-resilient cities to ensuring machine safety, mechanical engineers must play a stronger role, he added.

Special guest and Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), Engr. Md. Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury, said that major transformations become possible only when there is a desire for change. Mechanical engineering is no longer limited to conventional machinery—it now encompasses automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI), opening the doors to a new industrial era, he noted.

In his welcome speech, IEB Honorary General Secretary Prof. Dr. Engr. Md. Sabbir Mostafa Khan said that this year’s APM brings to the fore a crucial issue. The recent earthquake has shaken everyone, and engineers now have heightened responsibility—from public awareness to technological readiness—to mitigate risks.

The inauguration was attended by Technical Education Directorate Director General Abul Khayer Md. Akkas Ali; IEB Vice-President (Academic & International) Engr. Khan Manzur Morshed; Vice-President (HRD) Engr. Sheikh Al Amin; and Vice-President (S&W) Engr. Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan.

The session was presided over by the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Division, Prof. Dr. Engr. Mohammad Ali. Vote of thanks was delivered by Vice-Chairman Engr. Md. Kamal Hossaini, while the program was conducted by Division Secretary Engr. Muhammad Kamrul Hasan Khan.

Engineers attending the conference noted that greater participation of young innovators and researchers would accelerate industrial growth. Experts emphasized that to remain competitive globally, Bangladesh must prioritize advanced technology, skilled human resources, and a research-oriented approach in the production sector.

The international conference will continue for several days, with researchers and engineers from various countries presenting their papers, technological innovations, and design developments.

Other attendees included Engr. Sheikh Al Amin, Engr. Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan, Engr. Khandakar Md. Abdur Rahman, Engr. Md. Atikul Islam, Engr. Moniruzzaman, Engr. Muhammad Abul Qawsar (Sumon), Engr. Mohammad Mukammilur Rahman, Engr. Md. Nazir Hosen, Engr. Md. Abdul Bari, Engr. Rony Mohammad Jewel Hossain Chowdhury, Engr. Md. Golam Mowla, Engr. Md. Raihan-ul-Kabir, members of the IEB Dhaka Centre, Engineering Division, Central Council leaders, and engineers from various departments.
