Tesla has shut down its in-house AI training supercomputer project, ‘Dojo,’ and reassigned related staff to other divisions. As a result, the company will now rely more heavily on AI chips developed by partners and vendors for projects such as autonomous vehicles and the ‘Optimus’ robot. Dojo project head Peter Bannon is leaving the company, according to a report by Engadget.

Billionaire Elon Musk stated on his social media platform X that “it is not logical to split Tesla’s resources to scale two different types of AI chip design.” The company will now focus on its AI5 and AI6 chips, scheduled to begin production in 2026, with manufacturing to be handled by Samsung.

The closure of Dojo marks the end of Tesla’s efforts to build its own training architecture. Going forward, the company is expected to make significant investments in training-specific chips from firms such as Nvidia.

Meanwhile, xAI’s Grok chatbot has already been integrated into Tesla vehicles, and the company is operating a pilot robotaxi fleet.
