St. Martin, Sandwip and Bhasanchar also including under Smart Society project

Maheshkhali, the only hilly island of Bangladesh situated in Cox's Bazar consisting of Sonadia, Matarbari and Dhalghata is turning smart gradually. The island is being facilitated with Broadband internet after facilities. Through submarine cables, the island is already connected with power gridline. With the broadband internet facility, there will be smart schools, health service centers, agricultural service centers and so on. State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak held a meeting on the implementation of the proposed 'Smart Society' and 'Digital Island Maheshkhali' project implemented under the ICT Division.  In the meeting, it was decided to include St. Martin, Sandwip and Bhasanchar areas under the proposed 'Smart Society' project with Maheshkhali. Bangladesh Computer Council and concern authorities are instructed to complete all activities in this regard as soon as possible. The ICT Department, IOM and COICA will submit a feasibility study report in this regard within two month. On Thursday, This exchange meeting was held with the relevant senior officials including ICT Division and Bangladesh Computer Council Acting Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council Ranjit Kumar, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Senior Regional Migration Assistance and Protection Specialist Peppi Kiviniemi-Siddiq, Deputy Chief of Mission of UN Migration in Bangladesh Fatema Nusrat Ghazzali, Senior Program Officer Disa Sonata Farooq, Program Manager of Korea International Cooperation Agency (COICA) Bangladesh Choi Jinbo, Operations Manager of BCC Zahid Newaz Firoz. The proposed 'Smart Society' project in the meeting emphasized on high speed internet, technology facilities, smart education, public health, agriculture, and increasing access to technology, e-commerce facility for farmers, informing about weather forecast from international sources and so on. In addition, ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak said to emphasize the implementation of activities including training to make teachers, doctors, nurses, health workers and government officials proficient in information technology.
