Need to Reform ICT Policy to Boost Software Sector
Bangladesh's ICT sector has emerged as a promising industry, but significant reform is necessary to establish a global presence and generate substantial financial success, according to Saifur Rahman, an FBCCI member and entrepreneur. Currently, countries like India, the Philippines, and Vietnam are profiting significantly from software and IT service exports, while Bangladesh’s earnings in this sector remain close to $1.4 billion, indicating room for substantial growth.
Mr. Rahman proposes a cohesive branding strategy for "Made in Bangladesh" software products, positioning them on an international platform to reach global audiences. He further suggests developing breakthrough projects like operating systems, database systems, or headless content management systems to transform Bangladesh into a significant player in the global technology market. Mr. Rahman emphasizes the need for government support, investments in research and development, and collaboration between academia and industry to build globally competitive expertise in the tech workforce.
In addition, he recommends targeted initiatives, including establishing training centers in every district, increasing public-private investment in R&D, and allowing Bangladeshi software companies to open overseas offices. By leveraging these strategies, Bangladesh could significantly grow its software export revenue and gain a stronger foothold in the international technology landscape.
