Govt Moves to Mandate Technical Education from School Level
Tarique Rahman Emphasizes Tech-Tailored Teaching
The government is taking initiatives to make technical education compulsory from the school level, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced on Tuesday, 12 May, in the morning at the inauguration ceremony of a national workshop on higher education held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of University of Dhaka.
While speaking as the chief guest at the workshop titled “Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap for Sustainable Excellence,” organized by the University Grants Commission, he said that universities in the country have yet to reach the top positions in international rankings. To improve this situation, greater emphasis must be placed on research and innovation instead of rote learning. The government has taken plans to introduce innovation grants from college to university level.
He further stated that alongside this, initiatives are being taken to make technical education mandatory from the school level. Effective utilization of limited resources can create new opportunities. The government aims to prevent brain drain and advance development by retaining talent within the country.
The event was attended by policymakers, UGC members, vice-chancellors of various public and private universities, teachers, researchers, diplomats, representatives of the industrial sector, and development stakeholders.
Chaired by UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, the inaugural session was attended as special guests by Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon and the Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Dr. Mahdi Amin.
Two days after returning to the country from the United Kingdom, Tarique Rahman visited the Dhaka University campus on 27 December last year. On that day, he paid homage at the grave of Osman Hadi, leader of Inqilab Mancha. After four and a half months, he visited the university again.
The closing ceremony of the workshop at Dhaka University will be attended by the university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam.
The Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Professor A B M Badruzzaman, the Vice-Chancellor of North South University Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, and the Vice-Chancellor of State University of Bangladesh Professor Md.
