The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has begun deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the traffic management system of the capital, Dhaka. DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar said that more than 300 automated cases have already been filed within a week through the AI-based traffic monitoring system.

On 11 May, Monday, while inaugurating solar-powered traffic signal lights at the Airport Crossing in the capital, he stated that the city’s traffic management is gradually being transitioned into a fully digital and automated framework. As part of this initiative, AI-based cameras and monitoring technologies have been newly installed at 30 additional locations.

The DMP Commissioner said that the goal is to introduce a fully automated case filing system on Dhaka’s roads within the next six months. At that point, manual case filing by traffic sergeants or inspectors will be significantly reduced. Whenever traffic laws or the Motor Vehicles Act are violated, the AI software will automatically identify the vehicle and complete the case process.

He noted that AI cameras installed at 30 key points in the capital are capturing a few seconds of video footage of violating vehicles using real-time video analytics. The software then connects with the database of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to identify the vehicle owner’s details and sends digital prosecution notices to the respective addresses.

According to DMP sources, mobile app and SMS-based notification systems will be launched very soon. This will allow traffic case information to be delivered directly to vehicle owners’ mobile phones and enable online payment of fines. Officials say this will reduce dependence on human intervention and ensure data-driven law enforcement in traffic management.

The DMP Commissioner further stated that AI-based CCTV cameras will gradually be installed on traffic signal poles across the capital. These cameras will not only detect traffic violations but also help analyze traffic congestion patterns, vehicle speed, and road pressure.

He added that on the Elevated Expressway, camera-based digital surveillance has already reduced the tendency of overspeeding. The same technology will also be deployed on the 300 Feet Purbachal Expressway.

The DMP Commissioner claimed that technology-driven traffic management has increased the average speed of vehicles in Dhaka. According to him, while the city’s average speed was below 5 kilometers per hour until 2024, it has now risen to above 10 kilometers per hour.

Experts say that if effectively implemented, AI-based traffic monitoring systems could usher in a new era of smart traffic management, digital law enforcement, and automated transport control in the capital.
