Cyber Crime Clampdown: Govt Moves for Modern Laws and Tech-Driven Policing
The government has taken an initiative to enact more up-to-date laws to prevent gambling, online gambling, cybercrime, and money laundering, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said. According to the information he provided, a committee has already been formed for this purpose, and new legislation will be enacted based on the committee’s recommendations.
He made these remarks on Sunday, May 10, at the “Prime Minister’s Special Welfare Meeting” organized on the occasion of ‘Police Week-2026’ at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital.
Tarique Rahman addressed the event as the chief guest. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Monjur Morshed Chowdhury also spoke as a special guest. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir delivered the welcome speech, while Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Khandakar Rafiqul Islam BPM delivered the vote of thanks.
The Home Minister said that with the advancement of information technology, the nature and scale of crime have changed. To tackle modern crime, it is essential for police members to acquire technology-driven training and skills; otherwise, achieving the desired success in crime control will be difficult.
He said that over the past two months, there has been visible improvement in the law and order situation in the country. To maintain further normalcy, special operations are being conducted against identified terrorists, extortionists, and drug traffickers.
The minister also noted that the government is taking initiatives to amend and update existing laws to curb mob culture, making them more time-appropriate. He called on the police force to perform their duties in alignment with public expectations and aspirations.
Regarding the welfare of police personnel, Salahuddin Ahmed said that many constables do not receive promotion opportunities even after long service. Therefore, based on special policies and satisfactory service records, a number of members will be given honorary promotions at the time of retirement. Under this plan, constables may be promoted to honorary ASI, ASI to honorary SI, and SI to honorary Inspector.
He further said that the government is also considering the introduction of overtime allowances for police personnel who perform duties beyond regular working hours. Members from Inspector to Constable may come under this benefit.
The Home Minister added that central and divisional police hospitals will be further modernized and made more time-appropriate to ensure the physical and mental well-being of police members. Initiatives will also be taken to construct new and improved hospitals after assessing the requirements.
He also mentioned that the government is working sincerely to resolve infrastructure and housing shortages across various police units, noting that land acquisition and necessary funding are among the government’s priorities.
The minister said that, considering the government’s financial capacity, the reasonable demands of police personnel will be fulfilled gradually to transform the force into a modern and welfare-oriented institution.
