High Court to Operate Virtual Courts Twice a Week to Save Energy

In a move aimed at addressing the global economic situation and ensuring savings in energy and electricity, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh’s High Court Division will operate virtual courts two days a week.

The directives in this regard was issued on Sunday, April 19, by the administration branch of the High Court Division.

Following the end of the long vacation, regular judicial activities resumed in the morning at the Supreme Court, and the directive was issued later in the afternoon. On the same day, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury constituted 63 benches of the High Court. Of these, 29 are single benches and 34 are dual benches.

According to the directive on virtual court operations signed by Registrar Muhammad Nurul Amin Biplob, considering the current global economic situation and the need to ensure energy and electricity savings, an initiative has been taken to operate virtual courts in the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court two days per week. This will be done by utilizing information technology in accordance with the Information and Communication Technology Act, 2020 (Act No. 11 of 2020) and the practice directions issued by the court.

Under the directive, all bench officers working in single benches and at least one bench officer from each dual bench have been instructed to appear—either in person or through a representative—at the IT branch of the High Court Division with their email ID, password, and mobile number. They must collect their Zoom ID and password by Monday (April 20).
