Metro Rail VAT Waiver Extended Until June 2026
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has issued a notification extending the value-added tax (VAT) exemption on Dhaka Metro Rail services until June 30, 2026, aiming to further promote the capital’s popular electric mass transit system.
The decision was announced in a press release on Thursday, December 24, by Al Amin Sheikh, Public Relations Officer of the NBR.
According to the statement, the government had earlier granted VAT exemption on metro rail services until December 31, considering public interest and with the objective of making the environment-friendly, modern, and remotely operated mass transit system more accessible and popular. Following a recommendation from the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, the government has now extended the exemption period until June 30, 2026, in the public interest. The notification was issued on December 23.
Bangladesh’s first metro rail service was inaugurated on December 28, 2022, operating initially from Uttara to Agargaon. The route was later extended in phases up to Motijheel. The metro rail operates under a single-fare system, with no class or compartment distinctions, allowing all passengers to travel to their destinations at the same fare.
