Tech giant Amazon has announced that it will invest nearly $15 billion to build a new data center campus in northern Indiana, USA. The initiative aims to strengthen the company’s cloud-based computing capacity to meet the rapidly growing demand for artificial-intelligence-driven services, Reuters reports.

According to Amazon, the new project will add an additional 2.4 gigawatts of power capacity and create around 1,100 new jobs.

Earlier, last year the company announced plans to invest another $11 billion in the same state. Since 2010, Amazon’s total investment in Indiana has now reached $31.3 billion. Meanwhile, technology companies such as Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta are also investing heavily in building artificial intelligence infrastructure.

On the same day, Amazon further stated that it will invest up to $50 billion to expand the artificial intelligence and supercomputing capacity of its cloud services division for U.S. government customers.

For the Indiana project, the company has reached an agreement with NIPSCO, the local electricity and gas supplier, ensuring that the additional power costs of the project will not fall on regular customers.
