Nahid Islam Named in TIME’s 100 Most Influential People List
Nahid Islam, a leader of the anti-discrimination student movement and an advisor to the current interim government, has earned a spot in TIME magazine’s prestigious "TIME100 Next" list. His name was featured in the list released on Wednesday, October 2, recognizing his courageous role in the struggle to restore democracy and his significant contribution to the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government.
The 26-year-old Nahid Islam, a sociology graduate, emerged as one of the key leaders of the student and public protests that swept across Bangladesh in July and August. The protests called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Nahid became a prominent voice for the younger generation, channeling the deep-seated frustrations against years of oppressive governance in Bangladesh. During the protests, he suffered torture at the hands of intelligence agencies, which further increased his visibility and recognition.
Amidst the growing pressure from the student-led movement, Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 and left the country. Since then, an interim government, led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has taken charge, with Nahid Islam serving as an advisor.
In a statement, Nahid Islam expressed, "We must understand the emotions and aspirations of our new generation. The era of political violence must come to an end. We want to move forward."
