Looming Pandemic: Human Metapneumovirus Raises Alarm
Five years after the world emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, experts have warned of a new pandemic threat. In China and Japan, a virus known as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has sparked fresh concerns, with numerous individuals already affected by this respiratory illness, which bears similarities to influenza.
According to available data, HMPV is a virus that infects both the upper and lower respiratory tracts. As per information from the CDC, people of all age groups can contract the virus, but those with weakened immunity are particularly at risk.
To mitigate risks, medical professionals suggest adopting the same precautions used to combat COVID-19. These include washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching the face with unclean hands, and maintaining a safe distance from infected individuals. Such measures can help prevent the spread of HMPV.
Although the presence of HMPV was first detected nearly two decades ago, no vaccine has been developed for it thus far.
India is on high alert to ensure the virus does not spread from China in a manner similar to COVID-19. According to NDTV, there are reports of an emergency being declared in China, though this claim remains unverified. Symptoms of HMPV can resemble those of the flu or COVID-19, prompting health authorities to closely monitor the situation due to the rapid spread of the virus.
However, Chinese media reports suggest that despite the increasing severity of the HMPV outbreak, neither the World Health Organization nor the Chinese government has issued an official alert. Some outlets claim that an emergency declaration could come at any moment given the virus’s rate of spread.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated in a report that HMPV was first identified in 2001. It primarily causes infections in the lungs and respiratory system and affects individuals of all ages. However, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
Dr. Michael Head, a senior researcher at the University of Southampton, commented, “There is a fear of a potential pandemic, though it is uncertain which disease may escalate to pandemic proportions. This anticipated threat has been named ‘Disease X.'”
Around 11 diseases, including measles, cholera, bird flu, and scabies, are listed as potential pandemic threats. Among them, the recent HMPV outbreak has drawn significant concern from healthcare professionals.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media depict overcrowded hospitals reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic. A similar situation is being reported in Japan, where over 700,000 cases of cold-related infections have been recorded this season, according to local media.
Dr. Head further remarked, “The defining characteristics of a future pandemic will be its high transmissibility and the potential for maximum mortality rates.”
