Autodesk Sues Google Over ‘Flow’ Trademark Dispute
Software company Autodesk has filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging trademark infringement related to AI-powered software used in the production of films, television programs, and video games. According to Reuters, the lawsuit was filed in a federal court in San Francisco, United States.
In the complaint, Autodesk claims that Google has violated its trademark by marketing a competing software product under the same name, “Flow,” which Autodesk has been using commercially. Autodesk alleges that Google’s actions have caused confusion among customers and harmed its business.
Court documents state that Autodesk has been using the “Flow” trademark since September 2022 across various products, including visual effects and production management tools widely used in the film and television industry. The company says it was surprised when Google launched an AI software product named “Flow” in May 2025, targeting the same customer base.
Autodesk further alleges that Google had previously assured the company it would not use the “Flow” name commercially. Despite this, Google later applied to register the trademark in the South Pacific island nation of Tonga and subsequently sought trademark protection in the United States and other countries based on that application.
According to Autodesk, these actions have led to consumer confusion and resulted in business losses. The company is seeking compensatory damages as well as punitive damages in the lawsuit.
Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.
