BNACWC decides to consolidate chemical safety
The 21st General Meeting of the of Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention- BNACWC was held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Armed Forces Division of Dhaka Cantonment on Tuesday (September 26). In the meeting, important discussions and decisions were taken about the overall chemical safety integration of Bangladesh and effective management to prevent chemical accidents. Meanwhile, the scope of work of the Chemical Disaster Response Team (CDRT) formed from the forces to respond to accidents related to chemical warfare agents in Bangladesh has been finalized and the work of capacity building is going on. The Executive Cell of BNACWC informed that the web portal created for registration with BNACWC has been launched with the concerned organization to properly control the activities related to scheduled chemicals in the country. To this end, steps taken to update the relevant laws and regulations were also presented in the meeting.
Chaired by BNACWC Chairman and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Lt Gen Waqar-uz-Zaman, 43 senior officials from various ministries, agencies and armed forces, including members of BNACWC, attended the meeting.
According to a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting reviewed the progress of implementation of the decisions of the 20th General Assembly to implement the CWC more effectively and discussed important issues to be taken in the future.
Besides, the meeting was informed about the results of the inspection of Benapole land port by the expert inspection team of BNACWC and what the port authority should do for the sake of chemical safety. The BNACWC chairman gave special guidance to strengthen the safety management of chemicals in other ports like Chittagong port.
The BNACWC chairman stressed on the need for preparation of important hospitals in the country for the treatment of victims of chemical disasters/accidents and specialized training for doctors and medical persons. He concluded the meeting by pledging to work together to ensure the overall chemical safety of the country, including scheduled chemicals.
