Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered an immediate and total suspension of the platform until X complies with all court orders and pays the existing fines.
Brazilian law requires all tech companies to have a representative in their country who will take care of legal matters. The representative will be informed of the legal issues so that he can take appropriate action. But this month X removed its legal representative in Brazil. They alleged that Supreme Court Justice Moraes had threatened to arrest the representative.
Earlier last April, dozens of X accounts were ordered to be suspended for allegedly spreading false information. The court later gave X till Thursday to name a new representative. It was then told that X would be shut down in Brazil if the order was not carried out.
Billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of X, claims Brazilian judges are acting like 'arbitraries and dictators'. Moraes is 'a heinous criminal masquerading as a judge,' Musk wrote in a post on X.
The debate mainly revolves around whether the judge can block certain accounts on X for spreading false and distorted information. According to Musk, such directives are nothing more than censorship.
According to a report by news agency Reuters, the head of Brazil's telecommunications company has been tasked with suspending the platform's operations.
