Government Urged to Combat Fake News and Provocation Amid Rising Online Disinformation
Since the interim government assumed office, social media platforms, particularly Facebook and YouTube, have been flooded with misinformation and provocative content both domestically and internationally, leading to social unrest and economic disruptions. In response, the Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers' Association has called for immediate government action to address the spread of disinformation and maintain societal harmony.
In a press release, the organization emphasized the need for comprehensive measures, including:
- Enhanced public awareness campaigns.
- Development of reliable information sources.
- Establishment of fact-checking platforms.
- Formation of specialized teams for quick identification and counteraction of fake news.
- Introduction of hotlines and reporting systems to allow citizens to flag misinformation.
- Awareness drives to educate the public on identifying false content.
The association's president, Mohiuddin Ahmed, highlighted concerns about inflammatory and baseless reports from foreign media outlets and expatriates of Bangladeshi origin. He urged the government to act decisively, including temporary restrictions on such content, to ensure public safety and order.
With the government drafting new laws to replace the Digital Security and Cybersecurity Act, Ahmed stressed the need for interim measures to curb provocations and preserve peace.
