Chittagong University Signs Agreement to Establish Ocean Satellite Ground Station
The Chittagong University (CU) authorities have signed an agreement with the Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO), a national research institution under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, to establish an Ocean Satellite Ground Station on the CU campus.
At the invitation of the SIO, located in Hangzhou, China, CU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yahiya Akhter, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin, and Dr. Mohammad Moslem Uddin, a professor in the Department of Oceanography and the project’s focal person, visited Hangzhou from December 17 to 18. During their visit, they toured SIO’s state-of-the-art remote sensing and data analysis lab, ongoing research activities, the primary Ocean Satellite Ground Station on the SIO campus, and the Ocean Satellite Base Station in Lin’an.
Following a series of discussions on matters of mutual interest, the agreement was signed on December 19. The agreement was formalized by SIO Director General Prof. Dr. Fang Yingjia and CU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yahiya Akhter.
Once the Marine Satellite Ground Station is established on the CU campus, it will significantly enhance research opportunities and capabilities for Bangladeshi researchers in the fields of oceanography, weather, and climate studies.
Commenting on the project’s importance, Dr. Mohammad Moslem Uddin, professor and former chair of CU's Oceanography Department, stated, “The significance of the Ocean Satellite Ground Station is vast and far-reaching.”
