DNCC Installs 450 Solar LED Street Lights in Bhashantek Slum Area
To ensure citizen safety and smooth movement in the Bhashantek area of the capital, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has installed 450 solar-based LED street lights in slum areas.
According to DNCC sources, this solar street light project will save about 58,320 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Moreover, the use of LED technology will also reduce electricity wastage.
On April 19, Sunday in the evening, these solar street lights were formally inaugurated by DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan at a place adjacent to Gate No. 2 of Bhashantek Benarasi Palli.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration programme, he said that DNCC is working tirelessly to implement the Prime Minister’s commitment, and the installation of solar street lights in Bhashantek slum is part of that initiative.
Addressing the local residents, the DNCC Administrator said, “These lights have been installed with your money. These are your properties, so the responsibility of maintenance must also be taken by you.”
Shafiqul Islam Khan stated that the problems of low-income people will be addressed on a priority basis.
He also urged to stand beside those who are working for the country’s development.
Special guest at the event was the Prime Minister’s Assistant Private Secretary Abdur Rahman Sani.
He said, “We are fulfilling our promises. We want drugs, theft, and snatching to be eliminated from this area.”
At the same time, he emphasized increasing social awareness and urged monitoring of mobile phone use within families, so that no one becomes involved in harmful activities such as online gambling.
Under the project, a total of 450 solar-based LED street lights have been installed in various narrow roads and alleys of the Bhashantek slum. This will ensure the use of renewable energy and reduce dependence on the national electricity grid.
This initiative will make nighttime movement safer and easier for bout 150,000 residents of the Bhashantek slum. Experts expect that it will particularly enhance the safety of women, children, and the elderly, and help reduce theft, snatching, and drug-related activities.
Prime Minister’s Office Research Officer Abdus Sattar Patwari, DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Syed Rakibul Hasan, Additional Chief Engineer Md. Rafiqul Islam, along with other were also present at the event. The DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman presided over the event..
