Bangladeshi students have won two silver and ten bronze medals at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Students (IMSO), marking an impressive debut performance for the country.

The results were officially announced at the IMSO closing ceremony held in Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah province, Malaysia, at 7:00 a.m. Bangladesh time on Thursday. The Olympiad took place from October 5 to 9 at Albukhary International University, with around 400 primary-level students from 23 countries participating.

From Bangladesh, Orijit Saha, a fifth-grade student of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, won a silver medal in mathematics, while Tahmid Hasan, a fifth-grader from Manarat Dhaka International School and College, earned a silver medal in science.

Additionally, ten students received bronze medals. In mathematics, the bronze medalists are Md. Nabi Hossain and Ihan Abarad Rahman from St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Wafia Hasan Othoi from SFX Greenherald International School, Labiba Binte Fazle Rabbi from Mastermind English Medium School, and Rafsan Shafik Talukdar from Bonwari Lal Government High School, Sirajganj. In science, the bronze winners are Syed Ayan Isa from Lighthouse International School, Abhigyan Roy Golpo from SFX Greenherald International School, Akib Fattah Mustafi from St. Joseph International School, Shahabi Ibn Kabya from St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, and Md. Miftahul Islam from Mymensingh International School.

Expressing his joy, math silver medalist Orijit Saha said, “My journey in mathematics began when I won at the regional round of the Math Olympiad. Since then, I have participated in every math competition I could. Winning silver in an international event is the best achievement of my life.”

Thrilled with his success, science silver medalist Tahmid Hasan said, “I never imagined I would win a medal. I really enjoyed interacting with participants from other countries. This will remain one of the best experiences of my life.”

Congratulating the students, team leader and Vice President of the Bangladesh Science Popularization Society, Zahidul Amin, said, “It is an exceptional achievement that every member of the Bangladesh team has won a medal in our very first participation. I extend my congratulations to both the students and their mentors.”

Brother Leo Pereira, Principal of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, expressed his delight at the success of his four students, saying, “Our students possess world-class talent. I am happy but not surprised by their achievement. Initiatives like this must be expanded so that students can develop strong skills in math and science from the primary level to face future challenges.”

Although this was the 22nd edition of IMSO, it was Bangladesh’s first participation in the event. The Bangladesh Mathematics and Science Olympiad (BdMSO) was held for the first time in the country on August 22 through a joint initiative of the Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) and the Bangladesh Science Popularization Society. From this national event, twelve students were selected to represent Bangladesh internationally.

The Bangladesh team also received the recognition of Best Cooperative Team and was named First Runner-up in the STEM Exploration Competition at the Olympiad.
