Bangladesh is celebrating World Post Day for two days this year under the theme “A Post for the People: Local Services, Global Reach.” The celebration began on Thursday, August 9, with a colorful procession in front of the Postal Directorate building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Recalling the historic runners of the British era who once delivered letters with lanterns in hand, postal delivery personnel joined the rally on modern e-bikes, symbolizing a new chapter in Bangladesh’s postal service following the July Revolution. Dressed in traditional khaki uniforms, the runners’ signature shoulder bags were replaced by bright red boxes attached to the back of their e-bikes, reflecting the evolution of postal delivery in the digital age.

The procession was inaugurated by Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, who released pigeons and balloons to mark the occasion. He was accompanied by Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications Abdun Naser, ICT Secretary Shish Haydar Chowdhury, and Director General of the Postal Department S. M. Shahabuddin, along with senior ministry officials. Over a hundred officers and employees of the Postal Department took part in the event.

Following the procession, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, said that the interim government is implementing several reforms to modernize the Postal Department.

He stated, “Alongside the digitalization of postal services, initiatives are underway to make e-currency, e-postal services, and various technical facilities more accessible. The government is working with priority on digital address systems, regularizing courier and e-commerce services, implementing training and development programs, and reclaiming encroached postal lands. To expand Bangladesh’s e-commerce from cities to rural areas, we are developing an inclusive digital transaction and logistics ecosystem through public-private partnership.”

According to the program schedule, a seminar titled “The Post in the Vision of Tomorrow” will be held at 3:30 p.m. after the inaugural event, where experts will exchange views on the digital transformation and future plans of postal services.

On the second day, Friday, October 10, a drawing and quiz competition for students will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the closing and award distribution ceremony in the afternoon. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministries of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Water Resources, will attend as the chief guest.

To mark the occasion, an exhibition has been arranged on the ground floor of the Postal Directorate building, featuring various organizations under the Department of Posts and Telecommunications. Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) is serving as a partner in organizing the celebration.
