Eight fishermen adrift at sea for three days due to a mechanical failure of their fishing boat, FB Mayer Doa, were rescued alive by the Bangladesh Coast Guard, thanks to mobile network communication. The incident occurred near Buoy No. 5 in the Mongla Fairway area of the Bay of Bengal.

The rescued fishermen were identified as Abdur Razzak, Rakib, Faruk, Kamal, Alam, Zakaria, Sojib, and Rakib. According to the Coast Guard, they are residents of Pirojpur and Barguna districts.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq confirmed the matter on the morning of Monday, August 18.

He said, “On August 14, the fishing boat FB Mayer Doa went to sea with eight fishermen. Later, due to a mechanical malfunction that damaged the shaft, the boat became stranded at sea. Three days later, after coming within mobile network coverage, one of the fishermen contacted the Coast Guard emergency number 16111 at around 10:00 am on Sunday, August 17. Acting immediately on the information, Coast Guard ship Shadhin Bangla, which was on patrol in the sea, conducted a rescue operation. Within a short time, the boat along with all eight fishermen was rescued from the sea area near Buoy No. 5 of the Mongla Fairway.”

The rescued fishermen were provided with primary medical aid and essential food supplies before the boat was safely towed to the riverbank near Harbaria.

Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq further added, “The Bangladesh Coast Guard regularly conducts operations to ensure the safety of coastal and riverine areas. Similar rescue operations will continue in the future.”
