In a bid to reduce traffic congestion, the city of Dubai is planning to launch air taxi services by 2026, utilizing fully electric aircraft developed by California-based aviation company Joby. The first successful test flight of Joby's air taxi has recently been completed in the United Arab Emirates, according to a report by Reuters.

The report states that the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) model from Joby will allow passengers to travel from DXB Airport to Palm Jumeirah in just 12 minutes — a route that typically takes around 45 minutes by car. The aircraft can fly up to 160 kilometers on a single charge and reach a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour.

Through an exclusive agreement with Joby, Dubai has granted the company sole operating rights for air taxi services in the city for the next six years. The quiet and environmentally friendly aircraft is designed to navigate even through residential areas, making urban air mobility a more feasible reality.

However, the company has acknowledged that, at least initially, the service will primarily cater to high-income passengers. Regulatory approvals and infrastructure development remain as critical challenges before commercial operations can begin.
