Satellite Safety Step: Bangladesh Partners with Sternula for Maritime Modernization

To ensure safer and more coordinated vessel operations within its territorial waters and to promote the growth of its blue economy, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) has taken a significant initiative by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Denmark-based company Sternula. The MoU, signed on Tuesday (29 April 2025), aims to introduce satellite-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology in Bangladesh’s maritime sector.
The agreement was signed at BSCL’s headquarters near Old Eskaton in Dhaka, with BSCL Managing Director and CEO Dr. Muhammad Imadur Rahman representing the company and Sternula CEO Lars Moltsen signing on behalf of the Danish firm. Senior officials from both parties and Ali Mushtaq Butt, Head of Trade Mission at the Embassy of Denmark, were also present at the signing ceremony.
According to BSCL sources, the deployment of AIS 2.0/VDES—described as the world's first satellite-based maritime safety technology—will significantly increase vessel traffic in Bangladesh’s seaports. Sternula is the first company globally to offer this service, which enables continuous maritime communication and monitoring, thereby enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and economic opportunities at sea.
The MoU outlines collaboration in establishing seamless communication with vessels at sea, modernizing and digitizing ship operations, facilitating constant connectivity with ports, boosting innovation, and expanding income-generating opportunities within the maritime sector.
According to data from the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh has approximately 50,000 watercraft, including nearly 37,000 fishing trawlers. Many of these vessels venture 100 to 200 nautical miles offshore. BSCL noted that providing network access to such a vast number of vessels is only possible through satellite-based technology.
The AIS system helps shipping lines, fishing trawlers, port authorities, and other relevant stakeholders track vessel positions, movements, destinations, and other vital data. The system also includes navigational alert features. Officials believe that incorporating AIS 2.0/VDES technology is essential for transforming Bangladeshi seaports into modern hubs and increasing overall maritime traffic.
