Nahid Islam, the interim government’s advisor on ICT, Telecom, and Broadcasting, has declined the honorary recognition offered to him by Begum Rokeya University on its anniversary. His refusal came in response to objections raised by students, who opposed the recognition of two teachers allegedly involved in the attack on students during the quota movement and the murder of Abu Saeed.

On Saturday, October 12, Nahid Islam delivered his keynote address as the chief guest at the university’s anniversary event. Following his speech, a student stood up and protested against the recognition of Dr. Kamalesh Roy, Dean of the Faculty of Science and President of the Bangabandhu Parishad, and Dr. Shafique Ashraf, Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

The student argued, "We cannot accept the recognition of those who have been accomplices of dictatorship. Kamalesh Roy, President of the Bangabandhu Parishad, incited the attackers during the movement, and Shafique Ashraf wrote a controversial column following the death of Abu Saeed. Honoring them is a betrayal of Abu Saeed's blood."

In response, Nahid Islam remarked, "After forming the government, we had said that those who led the anti-discrimination movement from outside believed that our uprising was not over. If necessary, a second people's uprising could take place because we believe that the fascist structures still exist. Our demand has been the abolition of such a fascist system, wherever it exists, whether in society or universities."

Following this statement, Nahid Islam officially announced his rejection of the honor. Addressing the students, he said, "I was unaware of the allegations you raised. I urge the new Vice Chancellor of the university to take your concerns seriously. Perhaps, one day, when we can fulfill your demands in a truly fascist-free Begum Rokeya University, I will accept the honor."

This incident has sparked further debate on the university campus about the recognition of individuals linked to controversial events.
