CUET Celebrates Victory Day Focusing Unity and Patriotism
Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), emphasized the essence of true patriotism as a relentless effort to build the nation. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion program marking "Victory Day 2024," held in CUET’s Academic Council Hall on Monday, he stated, "The love for one’s country is innate. True patriotism involves an unceasing dedication to building the nation. Whenever the country is dishonored, its people face hardships, or conspiracies are hatched against it, we must speak out. Love alone is not enough; one must be committed to serving the nation. A new opportunity to rebuild the country has emerged. Making the country self-reliant should be the goal of every citizen, requiring collective effort. To make independence meaningful, we must rise above all divisions and work unitedly to overcome existing challenges and build an equitable Bangladesh."
The discussion was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Mahbubul Alam, Director of the Directorate of Student Welfare. Among the special guests were Professor Dr. Sudip Kumar Pal, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamsul Arefin, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Professor Dr. A.H. Rashedul Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology; Professor Dr. Kazi Afzalur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; Professor Dr. Muhammad Rashidul Hasan, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning; and Professor Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Registrar (Acting).
The event was moderated by Dr. Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury, Associate Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Ms. Tasmia Binte Hai, Lecturer of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Speeches were also delivered by departmental heads, including Professor Dr. Ayesha Akhter, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, and dormitory provosts, represented by Professor Dr. Razia Sultana, Provost of Shamsun Nahar Khan Hall. Additional remarks came from Professor Dr. Md. Arafat Rahman, General Secretary of the Teachers' Association; Engineer Md. Mokbul Hossain, General Secretary of the CUET Officers’ Association; and Mr. Md. Jamal Uddin, President of the CUET Staff Association. Representing the students, Tanvir Ahmed Chowdhury, a Mechanical Engineering student and President of the CUET Journalists’ Association, also spoke. The program began with special prayers conducted by Maulana Mofizur Rahman, Senior Imam of the CUET Central Mosque, with university faculty, staff, and students in attendance.
Earlier in the day, the Victory Day celebrations commenced with the Vice-Chancellor hoisting the national flag in front of the Vice-Chancellor's residence at sunrise. This was followed by visits to the graves of martyrs on the CUET campus who sacrificed their lives in the Liberation War. Special prayers were held after Asr prayers for the departed souls of the heroic martyrs. Other programs included a friendly T-20 cricket match between faculty and students as well as between officers and staff, extempore speeches, poetry recitations, patriotic songs, and a prize distribution ceremony for children and adolescents.
