AI-Driven Airbnb: Automation Accelerates Airbnb Architecture and AI Adoption
Global accommodation and travel services provider Airbnb has disclosed extensive use of artificial intelligence in its day-to-day operations. According to the company’s latest report, nearly 60 percent of the new code produced by Airbnb engineers in the last quarter was written by AI. This striking information was shared on Friday by the company’s CEO Brian Chesky during the revenue and expenditure meeting for the first quarter of 2026.
AI easing engineers’ workload
Brian Chesky stated that the use of AI tools has significantly boosted engineers’ productivity. It has been particularly effective in developing property management software tools. He said, “Earlier, a task that required a team of 20 engineers can now be completed effortlessly by a single skilled engineer with the assistance of an AI agent. As a result, we are now able to develop many software solutions for which we previously did not have sufficient resources.”
AI dominance in customer service
Beyond coding, Airbnb is also increasingly relying on AI in customer support. Currently, 40 percent of the company’s total customer issues are being resolved by AI chatbots without any human intervention. At the beginning of the year, this rate was 33 percent.
AI challenges in the travel sector
Despite AI’s success, Chesky acknowledged limitations in current chatbot systems within the tourism and e-commerce sectors. According to him, present-day chatbots are largely text-based, making them less suitable for image-heavy travel platforms. He also noted that chatbots still lag behind in map-based navigation and in comparing thousands of travel options.
Positive earnings performance
The benefits of this technological transformation are also reflected in Airbnb’s financial performance. The company’s revenue in the first quarter of this year rose by 18 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 2.7 billion dollars. During this period, a total of 156 million bookings were completed, which is 9 percent higher than last year. The company also reported strong popularity for its “Reserve Now, Pay Later” feature.
Industry trend toward AI integration
Experts believe that this move by Airbnb—similar to companies like Google, Microsoft, and Spotify—demonstrates that major technology firms are now adopting AI not merely as a tool, but as a core driving force of their operations.
