E-Filing Engagement Expands: Over 10,000 Tax Returns Submitted on Opening Day
More than 10,000 taxpayers submitted their returns online on the very first day of the 2025–26 tax year filing window, marking nearly a fivefold increase from the previous year. Officials say this strong early response reflects growing trust in Bangladesh’s digital taxation system.
According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), on August 4, the e-filing platform was officially inaugurated by Economic Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. On that day alone, 10,202 individuals submitted their income tax returns online. In contrast, only 2,344 returns were filed on the first day of the previous fiscal year when e-filing opened on September 9.
NBR figures show that nearly 1.7 million taxpayers submitted electronic returns last year, when e-filing was made mandatory for a limited group of individual taxpayers.
On August 3 this year, NBR issued a special order declaring online return submission mandatory for all resident individual taxpayers beginning with the 2025–26 tax year. However, exemptions apply to senior citizens above 65, individuals with disabilities or special needs, expatriate taxpayers, and legal representatives of deceased taxpayers.
Additionally, if a taxpayer is unable to register on the e-return system due to valid reasons, they may apply to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes by October 31, 2025. Upon approval, they will be allowed to file their returns on paper.
Currently, taxpayers can pay taxes and submit returns from the comfort of their homes using bank transfers, debit/credit cards, and various mobile financial services, including bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. Once submitted, acknowledgements and tax certificates are generated automatically.
The NBR has assured that taxpayers facing difficulties with online filing will receive real-time support through call centers and other digital service platforms.
