BUET Renames Central Library and Dormitory

Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have renamed the university’s Central Library, as well as one of its dormitories. The dormitory previously known as Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall has been renamed Shadhinota Hall (Independence Hall).

On Thursday, February 6, BUET students decided to rename the Central Library as Shaheed Abrar Fahad Library, in honor of the slain student.

Earlier, on Wednesday, February 5, the BUET Syndicate, in its 549th session, decided to change the name of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall. The official order, signed by Registrar Professor Dr. N.M. Golam Zakaria, confirmed that the dormitory would now be called Shadhinota Hall, following the syndicate’s decision.

Abrar Fahad, a meritorious student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at BUET, was killed on October 6, 2019. He was brutally beaten to death inside Sher-e-Bangla Hall by members of the then ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League after posting a Facebook status expressing dissent regarding Bangladesh’s water and gas agreements with India.

On the evening of October 6, Abrar returned to his dormitory from his hometown in Kushtia. That same night, members of the student wing held a meeting in Sher-e-Bangla Hall’s guest room and decided to execute their fatal assault on the 17th-batch student. Around 3:00 AM, university authorities recovered his body from the second floor of the hall.
