Residents of a section of Dhanmondi were deprived of high-speed internet for 36 hours, as nearly 2,500 broadband users in the area experienced a temporary digital outage after fiber cables were cut from utility pillars for maintenance work.

However, through the intervention of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB), connections were restored via a rerouted link through City College early Thursday morning (May 7). Still, the sudden cutting of fiber lines without prior notice caused significant inconvenience to residents until a bypass line was established.

According to sources, on Tuesday (May 5), hanging fiber cables were cut from pillars along the eastern side of Road No. 3 to Road No. 5, stretching from Science Lab to the Rifles Square area in Dhanmondi. As a result, broadband connections were disrupted, leaving residents without internet access for an extended period. Frustrated by the prolonged outage, affected users expressed dissatisfaction with service providers and demanded the establishment of a similar underground common internet connectivity route on the eastern side, as exists on the western side of the road.

Commenting on the matter, ISPAB General Secretary Nazmul Karim Bhuiyan said that cutting fiber lines without prior notice was inappropriate. “Had we been informed, customers would not have had to suffer. However, as soon as we became aware, we managed to restore connectivity by rerouting through City College. Since early morning today, customers have regained high-speed internet access,” he added.
